I've Sung all the Songs (2018)

I’ve Sung All the Songs was commissioned in 2018 by violist Povilas Syrrist‑Gelgota to mark the centennial of Lithuania as an independent state. He asked me to base the piece on a Lithuanian folk song of my own choice. As I was not very familiar with Lithuanian folk music at the time, I listened to a wide range of songs, considering whether I should choose something celebratory or something that spoke to me musically. I ultimately chose the latter and was drawn to Aš išdainavau – I’ve Sung All the Songs – a short, slow, and beautifully melancholic melody.

The middle section of the piece forms a strong contrast to the opening. Here the music becomes more rhythmic, lively and optimistic, creating a sense of forward motion before the folk melody returns, bringing the piece to a peaceful conclusion.

I’ve Sung All the Songs ble skrevet i 2018 på bestilling fra bratsjisten Povilas Syrrist‑Gelgota i anledning hundreårsmarkeringen for Litauens selvstendighet. Han ønsket at stykket skulle baseres på en litauisk folkesang etter mitt eget valg. Siden jeg ikke kjente så mange litauiske folkesanger fra før, lyttet jeg til en rekke ulike melodier og vurderte om jeg skulle velge en sang som markerte frihet, eller en som tiltalte meg rent musikalsk. Jeg valgte det siste, og endte opp med Aš išdainavau — «I’ve Sung All the Songs» — en kort, langsom og vakker melodi full av melankoli.

Midtdelen danner en tydelig kontrast til åpningen. Her får musikken et sterkt rytmisk driv og et mer optimistisk preg, før folkemelodien vender tilbake og avslutter stykket på en rolig og fredelig måte.
