Impressions of the East – 東方風情畫 (2009) for Alto Flute/Flute, Violin and Piano

Impressions of the East – 東方風情畫 was commissioned by the Aust‑Agder County Music Council for its 30th anniversary in 2009, and premiered at Arendal Kulturhus, Norway, in November of the same year.

The title suggests that the music recreates some of the images and memories from my encounters with nature, cultures and people of the Far East, particularly Taiwan.

​

In many East and Southeast Asian cultures, there is a long tradition of slow ceremonial dances, where colourful costumes, gentle music, and seemingly simple movements tell stories and create imaginary landscapes. The first part, Ancient Dance – 古老的舞曲, seeks to capture the atmosphere I experienced when watching these traditional dances.

 

The second part, Spring Festival – 春節, portrays the lively atmosphere and joyful anticipation surrounding Chinese New Year. As one of the most important holidays in East Asia – equivalent to Christmas in Western culture — it brings excitement and celebration for people of all ages.

Impressions of the East – 東方風情畫 ble bestilt av Aust‑Agder fylkes musikkråd til deres 30‑årsjubileum i 2009, og ble urfremført i Arendal Kulturhus i november samme år.

Tittelen antyder at musikken søker å gjenskape noen av bildene og minnene fra mine møter med naturen, kulturene og menneskene i Øst-Asia, særlig Taiwan.

​

I mange øst‑ og sørøstasiatiske kulturer finnes det lange tradisjoner for langsomme, seremonielle danser, der fargerike kostymer, rolig musikk og tilsynelatende enkle bevegelser forteller historier og skaper stemningsfulle landskap. Første del, Ancient Dance – 古老的舞曲, forsøker å gjenskape atmosfæren jeg opplevde når jeg så slike tradisjonelle danser.

Andre del, Spring Festival – 春節, beskriver den livlige stemningen og de glade forventningene rundt kinesisk nyttår. Dette er en av de viktigste høytidene i Øst‑Asia — tilsvarende jul i vestlig kultur — og feires med stor glede av både unge og gamle.
