Land of Rain and Songs for Singing and Whistling Violist (2023) / for Solo Viola (2026)
Land of Rain and Songs was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the remarkable Lithuanian singing violist Povilas Syrrist‑Gelgota. In this work, he not only sings and plays, but also whistles.
As Povilas is from Lithuania, he asked whether I could draw inspiration from Lithuanian folk songs. I decided to base the piece on the opening of two very different Lithuanian melodies.
The first motif is derived from the opening phrase of the Lithuanian national anthem, and appears at the very beginning of the piece. I slowed down the melody, giving it a different character and adding a distinct colour to the composition. The second motif, which appears in the vocal line after about one and a half minutes, is the folk song “Vai aš paklausiau” ('Did I ask?'). Although not widely known, its simple yet expressive and beautiful melody immediately captivated me when I first heard it. The music is written out of respect for the Lithuanian people and as a celebration their warm spirit and rich cultural heritage.
I have only visited Lithuania twice, but both visits made a strong impression on me. After getting to know Povilas Syrrist‑Gelgota and other Lithuanian musicians and friends, I have come to feel that this small country in the northeast of Europe has a strength and positive national pride that deserves to be celebrated.
The title Land of Rain and Songs is inspired by the Lithuanian name for Lithuania. In Lithuanian, the country is called Lietuva, and lietus means “rain,” which has given rise to the poetic nickname “The Land of Rain.” Lithuania also has a strong vocal tradition, and the combination of these two ideas shaped the title Land of Rain and Songs.

Land of Rain and Songs ble skrevet på bestilling fra, og er dedikert til, den bemerkelsesverdige litauiske syngende bratsjisten Povilas Syrrist‑Gelgota. I dette stykket både synger og spiller han, i tillegg til at han også plystrer.
Siden Povilas kommer fra Litauen, spurte han om jeg kunne hente inspirasjon fra litauiske folkesanger. Jeg valgte derfor å basere stykket på begynnelsen av to svært ulike litauiske melodier.
Det første motivet, som høres helt i starten av stykket, er hentet fra åpningsfrasen i den litauiske nasjonalsangen. Jeg valgte å senke tempoet i melodien, noe som gir den en annen karakter og tilfører komposisjonen en særegen farge. Det andre motivet, som kommer inn i vokallinjen etter omtrent halvannet minutt, er folkesangen “Vai aš paklausiau” (“Spurte jeg?”). Selv om den ikke er spesielt kjent, ble jeg umiddelbart grepet av den enkle, men uttrykksfulle og vakre melodien da jeg hørte den for første gang. Musikken er skrevet med respekt for det litauiske folket og som en hyllest til det litauiske folkets varme og rike kulturarv.
Jeg har bare besøkt Litauen to ganger, men begge besøkene gjorde sterkt inntrykk. Etter å ha blitt kjent med Povilas Syrrist‑Gelgota og andre litauiske musikere og venner, har jeg fått en følelse av at dette lille landet i Nordøst‑Europa har en styrke og en nasjonal stolthet som virkelig fortjener å bli feiret.
