Sunrise at Alishan (雲海粼波之阿里山日出)

Shimmering Landscapes (2009) is a work for solo guitar with the subtitle Sunrise at Alishan (雲海粼波之阿里山日出), a title given by my Taiwanese family.

Alishan is a mountain region in central Taiwan, renowned for its breathtaking sunrises. On clear mornings, the sun rises above the high mountain peaks while a vast “sea of clouds” fills the valleys below – a natural spectacle that has become iconic in Taiwanese culture.

 

The piece is in many ways programmatic. It seeks to evoke the shimmering light of dawn, the stillness of the landscape, and the gentle, meditative atmosphere of the early morning. At the same time, the music hints at the slow, continuous movement of the cloud sea, creating a sense of quiet motion beneath the surface. Through colour, texture, and resonance, the work aims to capture both the serenity and the subtle dynamism of this unique moment in nature.

Shimmering Landscapes (2009) er et verk for solo gitar med undertittelen Sunrise at Alishan (雲海粼波之阿里山日出), et navn gitt av min taiwanske familie.

 

Alishan er et fjellområde i det sentrale Taiwan, kjent for sin spektakulære soloppgang. På klare dager kan man se solen stige over fjelltoppene mens et stort «skyhav» fyller dalene under – et naturfenomen som har fått en helt spesiell plass i taiwansk kultur.

 

Stykket er på mange måter programmatisk. Det forsøker å skildre det skimrende morgenlyset, den stille atmosfæren og den fredelige karakteren ved soloppgang. Samtidig kan man ane den langsomme bevegelsen i havet av skyer, som gir musikken en følelse av rolig, kontinuerlig flyt. Gjennom klang, tekstur og resonans søker verket å fange både stillheten og den subtile dynamikken i dette unike øyeblikket i naturen.
